James Smith, our founder, began his journey in Robeson County. Born and raised in an area afflicted by poverty and hardship, he turned to drugs and criminal activity as an escape from the harsh realities of life. His troubled behavior led to him being incarcerated multiple times, the first time at the young age of 12. But from these challenging experiences emerged the inspiration to create an organization committed to helping others navigate their way out of similar hostile environments. Thus, Resources for Humanity was born.
