James Smith, our founder, began his journey in Robeson County. Born and raised in an area afflicted by poverty and hardship, he turned to drugs and criminal activity as an escape from the harsh realities of life. His troubled behavior led to him being incarcerated multiple times, the first time at the young age of 12. But from these challenging experiences emerged the inspiration to create an organization committed to helping others navigate their way out of similar hostile environments. Thus, Resources for Humanity was born.
At Resources for Humanity, our vision is to create a society where individuals are not defined by their past but by their potential. We dream of a world where each person, regardless of their beginnings or mistakes, has the opportunity to redefine their life. We focus on fostering resilience and personal growth as keystones for individuals to restructure their path and make meaningful community contributions.
Our multi-fold mission is to develop resilience in the face of adversity, promote personal growth as a stepping stone for a healthier life, and empower everyone to transcend beyond their circumstances. We wholeheartedly support each one in their journey, bridging resource gaps and providing a nurturing space for self-discovery and transformation.
Our organization binds itself with fundamental values that guide our foundations:
Understanding that each person’s journey is unique, we empathize with all interactions. We offer a safe, respectful, and supportive environment to express and overcome their struggles.
Recognizing that strength lies within each individual, we encourage personal empowerment. We aim to equip individuals with the tools and knowledge to navigate life confidently and independently.
Failure and setbacks may define a moment but do not represent a lifetime. We foster resilience and teach individuals to adapt, bounce back, and find success in adversity.
Believing in the power of unity, we cultivate an environment that nurtures relationships and builds communal support. We understand that the journey becomes lighter when shared.
As an organization, we extend an invitation to all who wish to be a part of our journey. If you align with our vision and mission or seek to contribute to a cause that values humanity above all, join us. We welcome you to transform lives with us as we pledge to change yours. Begin your unforgettable journey with us today.
